Here is an update on some very scary anti-choice legislation that has passed out of the Florida House Healthcare Council last week.  It is very possible that this legislation could start moving rather quickly. 

 

If you live in Rep. Bean's district- Beach people this may be you, you should definitely call his office to complain as he was the one that added the amendment for a 24 hour waiting period for women seeking an abortion.  It is HB 1497 and it has several co-sponsors.  Click here for a copy of the amendment.  If you want to see the original bill text go to www.myfloridahouse.gov and put in the bill number.  

 

This session it appears that once bills start moving in the house the senate usually follows.  This week the legislators are on a break for the Easter holidays, however they will be back next week and I would bet that the Senate committee will hear the companion bill which is SB 1602.  It is referred to the Health Regulation committee (comprised of all men- only 3 of which are democrats) and the Judiciary committee.  If it passes through this committee it is possible that it may be pulled out of the Judiciary or even heard on their agenda in the same week.  Sen. Storms is a new senator, but she appears to have some leverage in the senate.  It should be taken quite seriously as a threat to women's health.
